MILOSZ MAGIN

( 1929 - 1999 )

Born in Lodz ( Poland ) on the 6 th July 1929, Milosz Magin showed considerable musical abilities since his early chilhood.

Student in the piano class of Margerita Trombini - Kazuro and in the composition classes of Kazimierz Sikorski and Jan Maklakiewicz whom he considered as his spiritual father. Meanwhile, he studied violin, cello and ballet.

In 1957, he completed his studies ( piano, composition and conducting ) and graduated at the Warsaw Higher School of Music, obtaining the highest distinction.

Milosz Magin won prizes in several international competitions : The Chopin Competition in Warsaw, The Marguerite Long - Thibaud Competition in Paris and the Vianna da Motta Competition in Lisbon.

He left his native country together with his wife Idalia Magin, and stayed in Portugal, in Germany, in England and settled finally in Paris in 1960.

His brilliant career as an international soloist was suddenly interrupted in 1963 because of a serious car crash in which his left wrist was broken.

With an infinite courage, he regained his technique and by 1968, he was able to record the complete works of Chopin for Decca, a set received as a revelation and a reference for young pianists (complete reissue on CD by Universal in 2000).

During these years of recovery, he came back to composition which he had already started at the age of 16. Since then, composition became a priority till the end of his life.

He left a considerable work : brilliant pieces for piano, four sonatas, collections for young pianists, many concertos ( four for piano, two for violin, one of each for cello and clarinet ), two symphonies, a ballet, vocalizes and orchestral works.

Neither belonging to any school nor to any fashion, Milosz Magin’s music gives an equal part to melody, rythm and harmony. He was often inspired by the rythms of his native Poland. Particularly apreciated by the public, his works, are recorded and published, and they currently feature in the repertory of the greatest performers.

Prodigious virtuoso of piano, he regularly gave concerts in many different European countries and overseas, mainly performing Chopin works, his favourite composer, but also Mozart, Polish, French and Russian music and his own compositions.

Parallel to his career as a pianist and composer, Milosz Magin became a very solicited teacher and counted among his students coming from all over the world, some famous names like Jean - Marc Luisada. According to his students, he was an exceptional master giving all his knowledge, having the gift to inspire, to advice with tact, but at the same time, remaining of a great demanding.

He founded in 1985, with the support of his wife, also a pianist, the International Piano Competition - Milosz Magin. Devoted to the discovery of young international talents and to the promotion of Polish music, this competition takes place every two years in Paris with an increasing notoriety.

He died on the 4 th March 1999, of a heart attack, during a tour of concerts in Tahiti, and is buried next to Chopin’s tomb at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.

Passed in the history of Polish music, Milosz Magin is considered as one of the greatest composers of the XX th century.
